#PR101: Social Media Trends

Social Media

Social Media

Welcome to the New Year! As we take a collective moment to reflect, we’re able to see personal and professional trends that have carried through the past year, into the new one.

In the world of PR, one of the strongest trends we see as we stay virtually connected to our smart phones, laptops and tablets is social media. We believe it’s actually past the trend stage. So, let’s hope your business is not in denial on the long-term strength of social media.

Tactics have been altered. Instead of focusing on building public awareness through traditional press releases, building positive reviews and audience visibility are the best route. As PR professionals, we are no longer focused on paid advertisements, but earned and owned content recognition and engagement strategies via media partnership and our growing social networks.

With the rise of social media, PR tactics, in general, have gone viral.

Expectations are also changing. Our duties now run more like a marketing firm, then public relations. Targeted focus is now being placed on hard, measurable outcomes – not just how many emails you sent out. Outcomes of note include site traffic reports, lead generation and conversion rates. More tools are now being developed in order to measure the before and after, and this involves gaining and integrating marketing skills.

Here are several tips to help you keep up with the trends:

  • Press Release Multimedia – Make it easier to learn more, include videos, photos, and downloads
  • Combine communication skills of PR and the strategy development of marketing
  • Keep a positive reputation in high priority
  • Become a good storyteller for your company
  • Research – keep abreast
  • Manage timing for best visibility
  • Acquire basic videography, photography and design skills

Have a Happy New Year and stay trendy!
