Spoken Soul Rocker Receives “Spoken Word Single of the Year” Award
Spoken soul rocker (i am) isis was awarded a National Poetry Award at the 3rd annual National Poetry Awards ceremony, Saturday, August 18 at the St. Louis Regional Arts Commission in Missouri.
isis won in the category of “Spoken Word Single of the Year” for her latest effort, “I Saw You”. Dubbed a “bluesy funk for the new millennium,” the soulful track is a tremendous nod to her spoken word roots, while keeping with her affinity for rock-infused guitars and thrashing delivery.
“To win this national recognition for simply living my passion is truly inspiring,” said isis. “It’s both a humbling and motivating honor to be recognized by my peers and by the poetry/spoken word community-at-large.”
In its third year, the National Poetry Awards was founded to nationally recognize and support emerging and established poets in their craft. Past winners have included Talaam Acey, Mahogany Browne and Tai Allen.
Allen, who won for best album in 2010, said, “(i am) isis’ win is well-deserved. She continues to be diligent in her efforts to produce consistent, quality art via both of her loves – poetry and music – and everything in between.”
The Newark-born, Minneapolis-raised artist now lives in Brooklyn, where she is putting the final touches on her debut LP, amazingly random. The project is slated for release in Fall 2012.
