The first rule of being in PR is understanding that we are always on the clock. While most executives clock out after 5:00 pm, after-work cocktails often present the perfect opportunity for a pitch. And, as professionals we have to be ready.
Of course, we don’t want to seem overbearing while hanging out socially. Knowing how to work your pitch into casual conversation without making it seem too “worky” takes practice.
When you’re meeting someone for the first time, listen for buzz words in the conversation. Is he working on a movie and needs a song for the soundtrack? Be sure to let him know about your newest favorite boy band, who just happens to be your client. Or, is she throwing an event and needs products and/or product models? You’ve got clients for that, too.
Here are a few quick tips to turn that casual conversation into a business connection:
- Relax! The most important thing is to be able to recognize an opportunity and seize the moment.
- Keep your tone casual and fun. All work and no play can make a deal go sour.
- Pay attention. Make sure your casual pitch is relevant to the current conversation.
- Keep your surroundings in mind. If music is blasting in the background, it probably isn’t the time, but take mental notes and be prepared to revisit the conversation should a better opportunity present itself later.
- Practice makes perfect, so try it at home with friends or even some flashcards.
